Jonny Kim’s parents relocated to the United States of America and after landing in the country they opened a liquor store in South Los Angeles and his mother was a substitute elementary school teacher. According to Jonny Kim, he is the epitome of that quite a boy who lacked complete self-confidence. Jonny Kim attended Santa Monica High School and received good grades in his class and later graduated in 2002. He also graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from the University of San Diego in 2012 and a Doctor of Medicine from Harvard Medical School in 2016.

He became a selectee of Tillman Scholar and in 2017 he completed his medical internship in Emergency Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

At the age of 16 years, Jonny Kim decided to join the United States Naval Special Warfare Command as he placed the rest of his high school years physically conditioning himself for the rigors of Special Warfare training.

According to him, joining the Navy was the best decision he ever made in his life as it completely changed his attitude of a scare which didn’t make him have a dream. He was enlisted with the United States Navy in 2002 as a seaman recruit. He was assigned to Seal Team 3 and was deployed two times to the Middle East and also participated in over 100 combat missions as a combat medic, sniper, navigator, and point man.

During his time in Harvard Medical School, Jonny Kim took inspiration from an astronaut physician, Scott E. Parazynski, and applied for Astronaut Candidacy. He was however chosen among the twelve candidates on June 7th, 2017 from over 18,300 applicants to join NASA Astronaut Group 22.
