Mae Martin Biography
Born on May 2, 1987, in Toronto, Canada, Mae is a comedian, actor, and screenwriter who has gained recognition for their work on various platforms. Mae’s upbringing was in a liberal utopia that their parents had created, which helped shape their view of sexuality. Growing up, their parents exposed them to British classics like Monty Python’s Flying Circus, The Goon Show, and Blackadder, as well as American comedians like Steve Martin. These early influences would inspire Mae’s future in comedy.
Mae’s career started in Canada, where they were part of a comedy troupe called “The Young and the Useless.” They worked at The Second City comedy club, starting at the box office and later as a stand-up comedian. At just 16 years old, Mae became the youngest-ever nominee for the Tim Sims Encouragement Fund Award. They also wrote for the sketch comedy series, Baroness von Sketch Show, winning two Canadian Screen Awards for Best Writing in a Variety or Sketch Comedy Series.
In 2011, Mae moved to London to break into British comedy. They made a name for themselves with their 2015 Edinburgh Fringe Festival show, Mae Martin: Us. This led to their own BBC Radio 4 series, Mae Martin’s Guide to 21st Century Sexuality. Mae has also appeared on British television and radio, including The Now Show and GrownUpLand.
Mae’s 2017 Edinburgh show, Dope, was based on years of research on addiction, drawing on the work of Dr Gabor Maté. The show explored the concept of addiction beyond recreational drugs and delved into topics like love, food, sex, work, and social media.
Dope was adapted into a half-hour Netflix comedy special in 2019 as part of the Comedians of the World collection. This success led to Mae co-creating, writing, and starring in the Channel 4/Netflix comedy series, Feel Good, with Joe Hampson. The series, which explores the guilt of coming from privilege, has been praised for its immaculate writing and humour.
In addition to their work in comedy, Mae is also an author, having released a YA book in 2019 called Can Everyone Please Calm Down? A Guide to 21st Century Sexuality.
Mae’s rise to international stardom has been nothing short of impressive. They recently signed a deal with Objective Fiction, and in 2022, they appeared in LOL: Last One Laughing Canada. Mae also has a recurring role in the HBO Max series, The Flight Attendant, and is working on a “teen thriller comedy” with Netflix, as well as two films with writing partner Joe Hampson.
