He received another nomination for his performance as Mortimer Brewster in Arsenic and Old Lace. He then relocated to Boston to study acting at Boston University, where he graduated with a BFA in acting in 2021.

Gentry is an up-and-coming actor in the entertainment sector. He had acted as Trevor in the short film Speechless before he was cast as Alex in My Life With the Walter Boys. 

Additionally, he appeared in the music video for Belaganas’ ‘Silk.’ Furthermore, his most recent appearance was in an episode of the fantasy series Are You Afraid of the Dark? where he played the role of Porter.

Ashby Gentry on ‘My Life With The Walter Boys’

My Life with the Walter Boys is a Netflix original teen drama television series that premiered on December 7, 2023. The coming-of-age drama is based on Ali Novak’s 2014 novel of the same name, which was initially released on Wattpad. 

The show follows Jackie Howard (played by Nikki Rodriguez), who moves to rural Colorado after being adopted by the Walters, a family of seven kids. Her mother, father, and older sister Lucy were killed in an accident in Manhattan.

So, Howard settles into a new small town and has to negotiate a difficult relationship with two of the Walter boys — former football star and resident bad boy Cole (Noah LaLonde) and sweet, sincere, and bookish nerd Alex (Gentry), who she can’t seem to stay away from. 

Among the siblings, Alex is the most reserved, with his nose usually buried in a fantasy novel. What draws Howard to him is that he’s also trustworthy and kind. 

But when love sentiments are involved, things get complex between them. The fact that Howard is also liked by Cole, Alex’s older brother, is not helpful. As a result, a passionate love triangle follows My Life With The Walter Boys.

Talking about Gentry as Alex, Melanie Halsall, the creator of the Netflix show, mentioned that she knew Gentry was the perfect Alex when she saw his audition.

She wanted a “certain awkwardness and shyness for Alex,” which Gentry brought to the table. She told Tudum, “I just kind of fell in love with him.”

Explaining more about Alex and Gentry, she said, “This is going to sound so basic. But in his first audition, he said the lines right. He said them like they were in my head.” 

Moreover, Gentry looked exactly like how Halsall envisioned Alex to look in her head. “He’s super, super smart,” she said. “He’s got this really lovely, slight shyness to him whilst also being very confident in things he’s doing.”

My Life With The Walter Boys is Gentry’s first project as the main lead, but he has already managed to win over fans, followers, as well as critics with his performance. Thankfully, he is returning for the second season of the Netflix show since it has been renewed for Season 2.

On December 20, 2023, it was revealed that the show had been renewed. Gentry noted that he had “no concept of this” kind of success. 

When they filmed the finale of the first season, it felt like a tragic ending. Moreover, their last screening was on December 6, 2023, in Alberta, Canada felt like they had crossed a finish line for the show. 

However, it is not the end. Halsall also commented about the renewal of the show and said, “We have been overwhelmed by the love and support that the audience has given the show, and [we] can’t wait to dive back into the world of Silver Falls and the lives of these characters.”
