Kelly Ann Schutte, a 35-year-old guidance counselor from Pennsburg, Pennsylvania, is being prosecuted on grave counts of indecent assault involving an individual under the legal age of consent, institutional sexual assault, and corruption of minors.

These claims were made public following the opening of an inquiry on July 18, 2023, following a complaint from a mother stating that her 14-year-old son had a romantic and sexual relationship with Schutte, the counselor at Pennridge South Middle School.

Before police were called, a 14-year-old student in Pennsylvania was allegedly groomed and sexually assaulted by a middle school counselor several times over the course of the summer.

According to court documents and reports, guidance counselor Kelly Ann Schutte, 35, was charged with institutional sexual assault and other offences for her inappropriate relationship with the boy, which started in the autumn of 2022 and continued until this summer.

According to a criminal complaint obtained by NBC10-Philadelphia, Schutte’s family member who worked at Pennridge South Middle School allegedly saw them kissing inside her home in July, which is when police were first made aware of the alleged abuse.

The student said that the relative allegedly stormed into the house and demanded that the teen leave after witnessing the alleged kiss from outside.

The middle schooler told investigators that he had sat next to his counselor on a school bus on the way back from a class trip in fall 2022.

After that, Schutte would frequently call him into her office—often during class time—and begin messaging through Canvas, the school district’s digital platform and messaging system, according to the document.

Once the school year ended, their conversations moved to Snapchat and their relationship became physical with the student telling police he and Schutte had sexual contact numerous times in June and July of this year.

Schutte allegedly assaulted the boy in her own home in Pennsburg, in his Bucks County home while his parents were away and in her car, according to the complaint.

Investigators found the counselor’s earrings in the student’s home and discovered messages between them and photos of them together on his phone.

They also obtained their message history from Canvas as well as handwritten notes confirming the boy’s account of their relationship, the document states.

Schutte was charged with three counts of institutional sexual assault (intercourse or sexual contact with a student), three counts of indecent assault of a person less than 16 years old, and one count of corruption of minors.

Investigation and Allegations Unveiled

On the evening of July 17, the teenager’s parents found him at Schutte’s house, and that’s when the investigation started. After learning of this, he called his parents in a panic and disclosed the details of his relationship with Schutte.

The allegations state that this relationship began in the autumn of 2022 and continued through June and July of 2023, with multiple sexual encounters taking place throughout Bucks and Montgomery counties.

After Schutte’s charges were filed, she was arraigned on Friday. Pennridge School District Superintendent Angelo Berrios III spoke to the student body in response to the accusations. Schutte was immediately placed on administrative leave by the district, and she was not allowed to visit the school or interact in any way with the staff or students. The district is collaborating actively.

The counselor was placed on administrative leave in July pending the results of her case and has been banned from entering school district premises or having any contact with students and staff within the Pennridge School District.

“While we refrain from making premature judgments about the actions of the staff member facing prosecution, it is crucial to reiterate the district’s stance against any inappropriate contact between a Pennridge School District employee and a student,” the district said in a statement Friday. “Such behaviour will not be tolerated.”
