On January 6, 2010, John Michael Farren was arrested and charged with the strangulation and attempted murder of his wife, Mary Margaret Farren, at their home in New Canaan, Connecticut. 

According to a Greenwich Time article, John was arrested and spent six months in jail before posting a $750,000 bond and checking into a psychiatric facility in Connecticut. After being released from the facility, Michael was fitted with a tracking device and returned to his hometown of West Hartford, Connecticut, to live with his sister.

The formal lawyer was granted permission to act as his own attorney and present an insanity defense in April 2013.

A Connecticut jury ordered John in December 2013 to pay his ex-wife $28.6 million in damages for attempting to murder her. He was found guilty after only 90 minutes of deliberation by the jury.
