Sam Smith Calls Oscar Performance The Worst Moment of His Life ·

Although Sam Smithtook home Oscar gold last night, he was less than thrilled with his performance.
“It was the worst moment of my life,” the singer told the BBC. “Singing was horrible. I hated every minute.”
Smith won the best original song Academy Award for his tune “Writing’s on the Wall,” the theme in the latest James Bond film, “Spectre.” His win was considered one of the bigger surprises of the night as he beat out Lady Gaga and Diane Warren’s “Til It Happens to You,” from the documentary “The Hunting Ground.”
The night didn’t get better for Smith. During his acceptance speech, he dedicated his award to the LGBT community and (incorrectly) implied that he was the first openly gay man to win an Oscar.
“I read an article a few months ago, by Sir Ian McKellen, and he said no openly gay man had ever won an Oscar, and if this is the case — and even if it isn’t the case — I want to dedicate this to the LGBT community all around the world,” he said alongside Jimmy Napes.
Smith appears to have read McKellen’s comments incorrectly. In January, speaking about the best actor category, McKellen told the Guardian, “No openly gay man has ever won the Oscar; I wonder if that is prejudice or chance.”
Smith was not the first openly gay man to win an Oscar. Elton John, Dustin Lance Black, Howard Ashman and Scott Rudin were all openly gay when they accepted their statues.
