Marcel Marceau, born Marcel Mangel on March 22, 1923, was a French actor and mime artist best known as “Bip the Clown” on stage.

He referred to mime as the “art of silence,” and he performed professionally all around the world for more than 60 years.

As a Jewish boy, he stayed in hiding and worked with the French Resistance for the majority of WWII, giving his first significant performance to 3,000 troops after Paris was liberated in August. The world-renowned mime performer died in Cahors, France, where he had relocated after retiring from the stage in 2005. However, no cause of death was disclosed at the time, and nearly 15 years later, no further details about his death have been made public.

Meanwhile, the French actor was born on March 22, 1923, in Strasbourg, France, to a Jewish family. His surname was Mangel, but he changed it to Marceau after the Nazis occupied France in order to escape being identified as Jewish. In 1944, the Germans deported his father to a detention camp, where he was killed.
