Hank Plante Biography

Hank Plante born Henry A. ‘Hank’ Plante is an American reporter and newspaper columnist. He is on-air at NBC Palm Springs. Additionally, he is a member of the Editorial Board of Gannett’s Desert Sun newspaper in Palm Springs.

He attended college at Michigan State. He later moved to Washington D.C., thinking that he would work in politics. Hank is the winner of the George Foster Peabody Award and other multiple Emmys. He covered California for three decades for TV stations in San Francisco and Los Angeles. Currently, he writes occasional columns for newspapers in California.  Most of these columns mainly focus on politics or gay and lesbian issues.

The documentary from Acadamy Award nominee Dan Krauss and winner Paul Haggis talks about the first AIDS ward in the nation, which Plante covered as a reporter. As one of the first openly TV reporter in the Bay Area, Hank Plante reported almost daily on the AIDS crisis.

Winner of six Emmy Awards, Plante has become a legend in his field partly by following his conscience: He felt a moral obligation to report on the epidemic ravaging his own community in the 1980s at a time when there was widespread ignorance about how HIV was spread and hatred aimed at the victims. Plante’s community service has included work with the Human Rights Campaign, the Lambda Legal Defense Fund, GLAAD, Project Open Hand, and the San Francisco AIDS Foundation.

He also worked at KRIV in Houston before arriving at KPIX-CBS 5 in San Francisco in 1986. In his 20 years here, Hank has been a pillar of journalist integrity. His specialty is politics, but Hank has also shown a knack for pulling together the human-interest feature. A local of Detroit, Plante worked in both radio and TV news coverage, including 25 years at KPIX-television (CBS 5) in San Francisco.

Later in 2010, he resigned. Before that, he worked in print news-casting, including at The Washington Post. Hank Plante began his television career in 1976 as an assignment editor at WTTG in Washington, D.C. In 1978, he began his first television reporting job at WVEC in Norfolk, Virginia. Hank also worked as a reporter at KMSP in Minneapolis and KHJ in Los Angeles. His experience incorporates announcing and tying down at Channels in different urban communities.
