On 26 April 1958, Esposito was born in Copenhagen, Denmark.

His father Giovanni Esposito was Italian while his mother, Elizabeth Foster, was African-American. As a person of mixed ethnicity, Esposito grew up in Manhattan after his family moved there when he was six.

Esposito’s mother was an Opera & nightclub singer while his dad was a stage carpenter.

As a child, the actor shared an intimate bond with his mother. The mother-son duo used to recite poetry together. Things were perfect until his parents divorced. 

Following the divorce, there was never enough money in the family. So Esposito took it upon himself to help his mother pay the rent of their family home, with the support of his brother.

Their mother introduced the siblings to an agent for young actors. A few days later, the agent called, telling them to go for an audition at Broadway’s Winter Garden Theatre.

His brother, a year older, was sent to the other side of the stage. Then when his turn came, he realized he had forgotten to prepare a song. Therefore, he sang ‘Happy Birthday' in a low voice.

His agent pushed him forward, asking him to sing loudly. He did so and eventually got selected for the Broadway play, Maggie Flynn.
