Police have a suspect in the mystery killing of a neurosurgeon who was shot twice in the back of his head before being wrapped in a comforter and shoved into the attic of his $1.2million mansion in Detroit. 

Dr Devon Hooper, 53, who is believed to have lived alone, was found naked in a crawlspace at his home in West Boston Boulevard in the Boston-Edison District on April 23 this year.

Detroit police officers have now said they are 'confident' they have evidence to prove there is a suspect in connection with the homicide.

'We are very confident we are going to bring this family justice. We are confident that we are aware of the circumstances. We are confident in our suspect,' Detroit Police Chief James White said on Thursday, according to the NY Post.

'We just need a little bit more time to work with the prosecutor's office and we have a to-do list, and we're prepared to make an announcement before snow hits the ground. We just have a lot of work to do,' he said at a meeting of the Detroit Board of Police Commissioners.

Dr Hoover was found in the crawlspace in April after police carried out a welfare check when he failed to show up for a family party in Indiana. 

Detroit Police Chief James White declined to go into details about how the surgeon was found, but he said officers were 'quickly concerned about some of the things that they saw' inside the home. 

Police ruled his death a homicide and announced on April 28 they had a person of interest under custody on unrelated charges that was believed to have key information about Dr Hoover's death. This person, however, was released just days later.

At the time, White said the arrested man and Dr Hoover knew each other, but declined to go into detail over the nature of their relationship.

'This was not a random act', added White.

The official did not divulge a possible motive for the killing, but said his department has 'some theories'. 

'Right now, we're happy to have a person of interest who we can question,' he said. 'We're not going to stop until we have every piece of information that we need.'

'We are actively still investigating this case,' insisted White, adding that there is no indication there is still a risk to the community.

But just one day later, Dr Hoover's multi-million dollar home was entered by at least one suspect who came in through a window.

Nobody was home at the time of the break-in, and it remains unclear whether anything was stolen from the home.

The leading neurosurgeon was praised as a 'dedicated and well-respected' doctor by his employer, Ascension Michigan Hospital 

Dr Hoover was well liked in his community, and was previously named in Hour Detroit Magazine as one of the leading neurological surgeons in Detroit in 2008. 

In a statement following his murder, Ascension Michigan Hospital said Dr Hoover 'was a dedicated and well-respected member of the Ascension Michigan family and will be greatly missed by our community. Our sincerest condolence and heartfelt prayers are with his family, friends and fellow associated during this incredibly difficult time'.

His former neighbor, Roland Radinski, also told DailyMail.com that the community was experiencing 'sadness for loss of a nice neighbor and good surgeon'. 

'I have several friends that were patients of Dr Hoover and they were shocked by his untimely death,' he continued. 'They also had nothing but good things to say about him.' 

In the months following his death, the community paid tribute to the 'wonderful' doctor. 

A Facebook page dedicated to him reads: 'Rest In Peace beautiful and kind soul. You will forever be missed. You taught me how to love Neuro surgery working alongside you in the operating room,' wrote one of his colleagues. 

'Your patience was unmatched. Prayers to your family and all those that knew you. We are devastated that we have lost you! May your legacy and love for surgery forever live in those that were touched by your presence in this world.'

Roland Radinski (pictured), a neighbor of Dr Hoover for 15 years, said those who knew him had 'nothing but good things to say about him' 

'Last weekend, we lost a beloved colleague,' added another Ascension Hospital colleague. 'A very talented doctor... a man who no one can say anything bad about. He was a true gentleman. He was genuine and loved to help people.' 

A former patient added in a separate post that Dr Hoover was regarded as 'the best' and was 'not like most surgeons'.

'He said he would not operate unless absolutely necessary,' she continued. 'Always so wonderful, knowledgeable and supportive. We are so very devastated for his family, friends and colleagues. May he rest in peace.'

'I am beyond disbelief of how such a horrific tragedy could happen to such a gentle, brilliant soul,' said another.

'God bless you, Dr Hoover... I will never forget your kindness and respect.'

Dr Hoover was born in Indiana and is survived by his father and six sisters. His mother, Lauretta Hoover, tragically died four days after her son’s murder.
