Hynde had an interest in rock music and being a pop star since she was young. She would always drive to Cleveland to see her ”heroes,” perform, live. Chris left for London and discovered the emerging new rock wave called, ‘punk.’
She worked in a structural firm for eight months. It was not long before she met writer Nick Kent and found a job in the UK music magazine ‘NME’, where she composed articles half-heartedly. Not happy with the job, she quit it and worked at a clothing store called “SEX”. She visited France in 1976 and attempted to form a band, which did not work out.
She joined the band “The Frenchies”. After the band’s unique artist left, she took over as the lead artist. She later left the band and came back to London and got involved with punk development. In late 1976, she cleared a tryout for band individuals for another band that was named 999.

She arranged a demo tape and offered it to real Records boss Dave Hill in 1978. She met bassist Pete Farndon and together they created the band ‘The Pretenders’ after recruiting a couple of other musicians.
They created and released the single ‘Stop Your Sobbing’ in January 1979 and played out their first gigs in a Paris club. The single reached the top 30 in the UK. making the band become popular with the release of their debut studio album, ‘Pretenders’ on January 7, 1980.
