Cooper, the youngest son of Wyatt Emory Cooper and Gloria Vanderbilt, an artist, was born in Manhattan, New York City. Reginald Claypoole Vanderbilt, a millionaire equestrian from the Vanderbilt family, and socialite Gloria Morgan Vanderbilt were his maternal grandparents.
